Notable Cases

Anthony Stokoe represented the patient in one of first leading cases on hospital managers’ powers of discharge when concerning itself with a Nearest Relative application R (Huzzey) v Riverside MH Trust (1998). This case was also one of the first cases to discuss damages for unlawful detention and remains good authority.

Anthony Stokoe


BA Law

Anthony Stokoe qualified as a solicitor in 1981. He has been practicing mental health, capacity law and prison law for over 25 years. From 1994 to 2006 he was a sole practitioner, merging his practice with another firm of solicitors. In July 2014 he decided to concentrate on civil liberties and human rights, forming asnLAW with Rasheed Nujeerallee.

Anthony deals with all aspects of the mental health and prison law and has conducted high profile judicial review cases.

Rasheed Nujeerallee


L.L.B (Hons), LLM, PgDip Legal Practice (BVC)

Rasheed Nujeerallee trained as a barrister and subsequently qualified as a solicitor specialising in mental health and capacity law.

Rasheed represents clients in relation to all aspects of the Mental Health Act. Though frequently appearing before the First-tier Tribunal and the Hospital Managers he can also assist and represent clients in relation to unlawful detention claims and conduct judicial reviews should the need arise.

Passionate about civil liberties and human rights, Rasheed also represents prisoners and those who need assistance in the community.

Kris Gledhill

Kris is a consultant barrister. He is an authority on domestic and international human rights law.

Kris is an Associate Professor at AUT Law School, New Zealand and edits the Mental Health Law Reports and the International Journal of Mental Health and Capacity Law.

He has considerable experience in conducting all manner of high profile cases and was once a tribunal judge.
